We know remarkably little about the oceans that cover most of the Earth, provide half of our oxygen and help to regulate the climate. What we can be certain about is that the extraordinary diversity of life in the oceans is under immense and growing threat. Between a fifth and a quarter of marine species are already threatened with extinction; global marine populations have halved since 1970. As one expert on ocean warming notes in the Guardian today, it can still be tackled if we act immediately; this is a test of will, not ability. And yet, because we have still to explore the oceans more fully, we may never realise quite how much we have lost.
